Gold South African Krugerrand

In 1967, the South African government introduced the gold Krugerrand to promote the country’s gold production. While the Krugerrand is technically legal tender in South Africa, it is rarely used as currency. Instead, it has gained global recognition as a popular collectible coin, often referred to as a “medal coin.” This was the first coin to be priced based on the current market value of gold, unlike traditional currency coins. For example, a U.S. silver dollar is worth one dollar unless it holds extra value for collectors due to rarity or condition. Initially, the Krugerrand was a one-ounce coin made from 22-carat gold, with no nominal value printed on it. Its worth fluctuates based on the market price of gold. Today, Krugerrands are available in various sizes, including half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and one-tenth ounce.

This coin is made from nearly pure gold, containing no base metals, and the gold used is exclusively sourced from Canadian gold mines.

US rare coins

U.S. Rare Coins

The U.S. Mint began producing its first gold coins in 1795. However, during the Great Depression in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt made it illegal for American citizens to own gold. He mandated that all gold coins be returned to the U.S. Treasury, where millions were melted down into gold bars. These government recalls and the subsequent melting of coins significantly reduced the supply, making these once common gold coins extremely rare. As a result, pre-1933 gold U.S. coins are now in limited supply, and they have become highly sought after by collectors and investors.

Gold American Eagle

The U.S. Gold Double Eagle, featuring the Saint-Gaudens design, was minted from 1907 until 1932. While 445,500 Double Eagles were produced with a 1933 date, none ever entered circulation due to changes in currency laws during the Great Depression. To combat the banking crisis and stabilize the economy, President Franklin Roosevelt took the U.S. off the gold standard. This not only halted the issuance of new gold coins but also required citizens to turn in the gold coins they already owned.
